Frequently Asked Questions

Why Would I Benefit From Essential Oils?

Research has shown essential oils to work very quickly. It takes approximately:
- 22 seconds for essential oil molecules to reach the brain
- 2 minutes once the molecules are found in the blood stream
- 25 minutes until every cell is affected in the body
- The current percentage of reported side effects is 0.006% with doTERRA CPTG oils, such as minor skin irritation due to improper application.
- Essential oils do not contain allergens. True allergic responses occur when the body has an inappropriate immune reaction after consumption or exposure to a normally harmless protein molecule.
How Do I Use Essential Oils?

Aromatic is the easiest way to use essential oils. We receive 50-70% of therapeutic benefit from aromatic usage.
- Inhale the essential oil directly from the bottle or by placing a drop in the palms of your hands, rubbing together, and cupping around your face.
- Add 3-5 of drops of your favorite dōTERRA essential oil in your water diffuser. All dōTERRA diffusers have an auto turn off, which means it will turn off when the water is low or when the time is up.
- Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to your favorite diffuser jewelry. You can find my favorite necklace here.
What are benefits to diffusing?
- Reduces airborne pathogens, aides in protecting your environment
- Diffusing is easiest way for a family to reap the therapeutic benefits from the oil.
- Supports respiratory system, by opening airways.
- Enhances mood. Need help sleeping, focusing, relaxing? Diffuse!
We gain 10-30% therapeutic value from topical application.
Because essential oils are volatile compounds (meaning they can evaporate off the skin), it is recommended to use a carrier oil when applying dōTERRA essential oils topically. My favorite carrier oil is fractionated coconut oil. It is light, non-greasy, has no smell, and is inexpensive.
Where do I topically apply Essential Oils?
- The feet have the largest pores, and since essential oils work systemically they will enter your system in 30 seconds and reach every cell in 20-30 mins.
- If trying to combat a specific discomfort, apply the essential oils with fractionated coconut oil directly to the area or the designated reflexology point.
- Add a few drops of doTERRA essential oil to a hot bath to relax and soothe.
Dilution is very important when using essential oils. As mentioned before they are 50-70xs stronger than their corresponding herbs. The typical dilution rate:
-
Most essential oils are very safe when used internally, but it is important to be aware of proper dosage protocols. It is best to start with the lowest possible dose (1–2 drops) and then increase the dose as needed. We gain 95% therapeutic benefit from taking essential oils internally.

When it comes to using essential oils, the entire family can benefit. However, you need to ensure that you’re using proper usage guidelines to keep yourself safe and healthy.
- NEVER give children or babies essential oils internally.
- ALWAYS dilute essential oils when using with a baby or child.
- Peppermint & Eucalyptus should be avoided on children under the age of 2 years old. There are other essential oils that will work more than sufficiently for your “littles”. - Some essential oils require more dilution than others, (ex: clove & cinnamon) . Make sure to properly dilute essential oils marked “sensitive” or “hot”.
- Although sensitivity reactions are rare, it is prudent to conduct a simple skin test before beginning topical use of a new essential oil. Do this by mixing a small dose of essential oil (1–2 drops) with 3–6 drops of carrier oil and apply to an inconspicuous area of skin. If any redness, pain, itchiness, swelling, or other adverse symptoms result, you may have a sensitivity to that oil.
